Panel Discussion Reflection: Digital Identity

In this discussion the panellist discussed what defined digital identity. They presented a wide array of information to the class. The information ranged anywhere from having one’s identity linked to their social security to how a person is perceived on the internet. We discussed an interesting topic about how an internet user could be perceived differently depending on what they’re using the internet for An example given was that a gamer would have such an identity that other gamers could only distinguish them by their username. In turn, this same thought is used to consider how people are perceived as bloggers, facebook users, and any other media they may use. This discussion led me to think if a person with so many personalities could have some personality disorder in a sense. That is a whole discussion in it of it self. Another topic presented during the discussion was that if all users were known to have one digital identity linked to them would it  undermine the whole idea of “privacy on the web”? The discussion was well presented and thorough. It presented a vast amount of information that also lead the class to have an in depth thought about having a digital identity.

Panel Discussion Reflection: Privacy/Openness

The discussion we had in class about privacy and openness was a well thought out discussion. The panel gave accounts of real life scenarios that pertained to our everyday life that we as internet users can relate to. Much of the class had differing opinions with privacy and openness. I thought it was interesting that some students had different opinions that were for or against certain medias pulling a users information. We discussed about how being very open on the internet could affect a persons social life, work life, and how they are perceived by people in general. One of the panellist showed a video that unveiled what information people could have on us and how it is easily accessible. I didn’t think it was petrifying to know that our information is saved on the web or even that it isn’t hard to access. I feel that way because nothing anyone could do on the internet could be done in secrecy in all actuality, at least for what I know.

Lawrence Lessig: Laws that choke creativity

The video on Lawrence Lessig: Laws that choke creativity covers ours discussion we’re discussing this week in the Internet Course.

I found it interesting that this video invoked a lot of opinion that are similar to what people think about technology today. The opinion and conflict that society has today is how technology may be diminishing the human society. He brought up the “talking machine” and suggested that the original voice of music sung by people will change. There will become no originality to it due to these “talking machines”. He then spoke about how because of airplanes that flew over head, these chickens would run into walls trying to follow the airplanes. It gives sense that technology not only has affect on people but affect on the world as a whole. The Jesus video was rather hilarious. He refers to the digital technology is how generations now use it to express themselves.  He really shows how creativity can be brought up by anyone, it does not take a professional to do the things that long ago, amateurs weren’t able to do. He also suggest that digital technology now requires some form of technology and that copyright conflict from the law and use of it is a gray subject.

Panel Discussion Reflection: Creation and Consumption

This weeks panel discussed a wide range of topics that we all are familiar with and can relate to. It discussed commons things that the majority of the people who surf the web are aware about. A common occurrence in our society is the “seflie”. I’ve learned that the “selfie” has been created as some type of movement to “take a picture of oneself”. Although, taking a picture of oneself has gone on for many years and generations now, the idea of essentially taking a picture of yourself and the purpose behind taking a picture of yourself has changed. Another topic covered was about how the hashtag came about. In the discussion I learned that it came about to allow others to be able to categories certain topics so that things were easily referenced. This group covered topics that were very relevant to most of the students in the class, probably all the students, seeing that we do all use the internet. The group was very knowledgeable about the topics covered in what was created in the comings of the internet and how the things on the internet are being consumed.

Panel Discussion Reflection: How It Has Evolved

In this discussion the group discussed how what we use today has evolved from the use of the internet. The group went into depth about dating sites. From this discussion I’ve learned the there are numerous amounts of different kinds of dating sites. The dating sites has taken off from a personal level to a more cyber interaction. Generally these dating sites are for people looking to find the right one. Now it has evolved into people looking for “the one they need” By that the discussion introduced different kinds of data sites, such as, farmers only, data sites based on race, etc, The group also showed a video of a comedian who talked about his involvement on a dating site and how different it is using a dating site than meeting on person. This panel went into great detail about dating sites which allowed the class to understand how the internet has affected how the common uses society uses has evolved.

Panel Discussion Week 2: How it Works

HEY Y’ALL! This is panel discussion week 2 on ‘How it Works’. This week we will discuss the basis on how the internet works. Each of us will gear towards a specific topic in relation to the internet. Things we will discuss will primarily be about what we use everyday on the internet. Have you ever thought about what you use everyday on the internet?

Consider the following questions before class tomorrow.

  1. What is the internet?
  2. How does the internet work?
  3. What can you do with the internet?
  4. Why do you resort to the internet instead of outside resources? (Shopping, yellow pages, reviews, news, etc.)
  5. Is the internet a physical thing or an idea in what we use?
  6. How are we benefiting from the internet and how is the internet benefiting from us using it?
  7. In what ways do we take the internet for granted?

Panelists: Kaitlin, Dalina, Hannah, Matt.

What is the Internet?

I’m sure we all can relate to this video.. This was literally everyone the first day of class (just in kid form lol).
We should question ourselves after each week of class :

This video summarizes how the internet works. It encompasses all the necessary tools in order for the “internet” to essentially work. I found that there’s a lot that goes into the internet such as, networking, data transfer, connections, IP address, and so much more that allows a user to literally enter the net. In order to get a grasp of the internet’s means, you would have to explorer the things in which the internet is made up of.

Where Wizards Stay Up Late in Relation to “How It Works”

I’ve come to find that after reading past the first few chapters of the readings the book has gone into depths with how the internet works. This is relevant to what I am studying in class, “How It Works”. More specifically, I have angled my studies towards search engines. If you take a look at the CMAP I created for “How It Works” , you will find that search engines and the internet intertwines with each other.  Included are links that will show you what makes up search engines and useful information on literally how it works. Enjoy!
